The first of two full moons this month rose on the first day of the month. And our southeast Michigan area thankfully had clear skies!
I kept looking toward the southeast for the moon rising, but I was in an area where tall trees were blocking the sky.
It wasn’t until around 11PM Eastern Daylight Time that I finally saw the moon rise above the treetops.
What an amazing red color!
Wondering why it’s called the Sturgeon Moon?
According to the Almanac, Algonquin tribes in the northeastern part of the United States called it the Sturgeon Moon because giant sturgeon in the Great Lakes and other bodies of water were more easily caught in August.
