With early evening rain and cloudy skies forecast in southeast Michigan, I didn’t think I’d get a chance to see June’s full moon, also known as the strawberry moon.
Thankfully, skies cleared for a while before clouds soon moved over the first full moon of summer.
I took a few photos; the best ones showed the full moon with some clouds beginning to move in.
Wondering why it’s called the strawberry moon?
It’s not because June’s full moon has a reddish color or hue.
According to the The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Algonquin tribes in the northeastern part of the United States as well as the Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota called it the strawberry moon to mark ripening of June-bearing strawberries.
Other names for June’s full moon include:
- Mead moon
- Birth moon
- Hatching moon
- Blooming moon
