Photo of the Week: Southern Blue Flag

Native to Michigan, Southern Blue Flag iris is one of the native plants I bought last year at the Kensington Metropark spring native plant sale.

The plants sold at the sale are from seed collected from metropark plants.

I wasn’t sure when to expect it to bloom. Since early April, I kept checking my Southern Blue Flag plant every few days, but only saw the green sword-like leaves rising from the soil.

The purple bearded iris next to it bloomed a couple weeks ago. The “Swans in Flight” white Siberian Iris began blooming this week.

Which had me wondering if I should move the plant to a wetter location, since I learned Southern Blue Flag can be grown in up to six inches of standing water.

I didn’t see any buds on the Southern Blue Flag last week. And I don’t remember checking it two days ago.

And then yesterday, this one burst in bloom.

I was glad to see its first flower!
