Photo of the Week: Shagbark Hickory in Spring

I almost missed seeing the beautiful buds of the Shagbark Hickory as I was hiking the trails at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Environmental Interpretive Center and looking for colorful spring birds.

Some movement caught my eye. I turned around to see the unfolding compound leaves of the hickory buds.

Not sure I’ve ever seen Shagbark Hickory buds in spring; I’ve always been more interested in the nuts in fall.

What gorgeous color and shape!

  1. Thank you for posting this. I’ve just seen this bud for the first time ever, in SE Minnesota and your post helped me determine what kind of tree it was. Beautiful shot!
