Photo of the Week: Set Your Goals on Fire!

The brilliant red steel, aluminum, and mirror sculpture can’t be missed as you walk the southwestern section of Schoolcraft College’s campus.

Created by Marilyn Strandt, Set Your Goals on Fire! is a five-foot tall metallic spiral of interweaving red flames reaching to the sky, with a mirror in the middle of the sculpture.

According to Strandt, she envisioned students standing inside the spiral sculpture, seeing themselves in the mirror, and asking

themselves if their actions are getting them what they really want out of life.

Students can use metal keys inside the drop box near the sculpture to write their initials and goal.

yellow metal key with inscription of eat healthy, eat to live, not live to eat dated September 26, 2019.

The metal key is then spun on the rods until it lands on the hot coals at the base of the sculpture.

Set Your Goals on Fire! was part of the 2018 ArtPrize art exhibit in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

After the exhibit, Strandt donated her sculpture to Schoolcraft College.

Supported by a grant from the Schoolcraft College Foundation and the Rockall Fund, Set Your Goals on Fire is one of almost two dozen sculptures installed on the Livonia, Michigan campus as part of the Schoolcraft College Outdoor Sculpture Initiative.

Strandt’s sculpture can be found outside the McDowell Center in the southwest corner of campus.
