Photo of the Week: Sable Falls near Grand Marais, Michigan

How many more steps to go? I asked the couple walking past me as I stopped on what I thought was the third platform of staircases leading down to the waterfalls.

I had already gone down a lot of stairs, thinking that this descent was more than the 94 steps you take to view Tahquamenon Falls.

The woman replied, You’re a little more than half way. I’ve counted 96 steps so far going back up. There are 169 steps in total.

Whoa.

While the sign at the head of the trail said it was a short half mile walk to Sable Falls, what it failed to include was that the ½ mile was almost all straight down!

It was a stunning view when I reached the bottom.

Sable Falls

Located on the eastern portion of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Sable Falls is found in a secluded area outside of Grand Marais, Michigan on the southern shore of Lake Superior.

And based on the few people I saw compared to when I visited Miners Falls, Mosquito Falls, and Munising Falls earlier this fall, it’s one of the least visited waterfalls of the park.

Sable Falls has a different type of beauty than the other falls.

Rather than a straight fall over a cliff, water tumbles over numerous sandstone ledges, gathering in small pools before cascading past the yellow and gold sugar maples as it makes its way to Lake Superior.
