Photo of the Week: Rainbow at the Airport

When I was a child, after every summer rainstorm you could find me searching the sky for a rainbow.

I rarely found one, but when I did it felt like magic!

After rainstorms moved through our area a few days ago, I went birding at one of our smaller local airports.

I thought the rain showers were done. I was wrong.

A quick hard rain shower moved over the airport in about five minutes, followed by bright sunshine.

And I happened to be at the right place at the right time.

Gazing across an open grassy field to the road around the airport, I saw a beautiful half-circle multi-colored rainbow.

I doubt if the folks in their vehicles had any idea they were in the middle of a rainbow!

Multi-colored rainbow in front of a line of green-leaved trees and utility wires lining the side of a road. A green grass field in the foreground.

What was fascinating about the rainbow was how low it was, how close it was (only a few hundred feet), and how I could see through the rainbow to the trees behind it.

Amazing!
