I always seem to have other activities on Sunday afternoons that keep me from watching the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in person.
And today was no different.
But I was able to watch some of the webcast of their performance of three dance episodes from Leonard Bernstein’s On the Town.
This week’s photo shows Detroit Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Yoonshin Song, and other violinists, performing “The Dance of the Great Lover” from On the Town.
If you’re not familiar with it, On the Town premiered on Broadway in December 1944. The story is about three sailors on shore leave for 24 hours in New York City. The play was derived from the ballet Fancy Free, which also had music by Leonard Bernstein.
Since last March, I’ve been able to watch several of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) free live HD webcasts.
The DSO is the first orchestra in the United States with robotic camera technology which allows fantastic closeup views of the orchestra members.
Want to see their previous webcasts?
Check out the DSO webcast recordings on their Livestream channel (includes livestreams from 2014 to 2022).
Watching today’s webcast made me long to see a stage version of On the Town. Anyone know of a performance in metro Detroit in the next few months?
