Photo of the Week: Nasturtiums in the Garden

I’ve been a fan of nasturtiums for years, ever since I ate my first one during my five-year wedding anniversary dinner.

Loved the peppery taste of the leaves and flowers!

But when I tried growing nasturtiums, I wasn’t very successful. For several years in a row, seeds would germinate and leaves would grow.

Mid-summer would come around and the nasturtium plants would die.

Frustrated, I gave up growing them.

Until this year, when I grew nasturtium seeds in potting soil in a pot in the front courtyard.

And they thrived!

Brilliant orange and yellow flowers have put a smile on my face since they started blooming in early June.

And they’ve bloomed non-stop!

I kept the pot in the front yard and transplanted a few seedlings into a hanging basket in the backyard.

Where I see the Ruby-throated Hummingbird stopping by daily to drink some nectar.
