Photo of the Week: Naomikong Overlook

One of my favorite drives in the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan is the drive around Whitefish Bay, also known as the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway.

And this weekend I was excited to make the drive around the bay to catch the fall colors.

The drive follows the Lake Superior shoreline along Whitefish Bay from M-123, just south of the Tahquamenon Falls State Park all the way through Brimley.

Last year I took the drive around the bay earlier in the season, on National Public Lands Day.

I love the drive, it’s quiet, you see few vehicles as you stop at historic lighthouses, hike through hardwood forests, dip your toes in the chilly waters of Lake Superior at beautiful sand beaches, and take in the stunning overlooks of Whitefish Bay.

With the autumn colors near their peak, the overlook was filled with brilliant red and gold colors of the changing deciduous trees against the deep green colors of the evergreens.
