Photo of the Week: Murals in the Market 2018

Finding my way around Detroit’s Eastern Market regular shoppers, scooter riders, lines of vehicles, and tour groups looking at this year’s Murals in the Market was a challenge yesterday.

With cool temperatures, the first day of fall was a busy day at the market!

Despite the crowds, I managed to catch a few views of this year’s Murals in the Market, the fourth celebration of more than 50 international and local mural artists at Eastern Market.

Created by Detroit artist Tony WHLGN (pronounced Hoo – li – gen), this mural of almost two dozen brightly colored masks stood out for me.

In addition to his mural on Orleans Street, east of Eastern Market, WHLGN also created a Paint By Numbers mural, Spa-A-Peel, at 10925 Grand Boulevard.

What is Murals in the Market?

Launched in 2015, Murals in the Market is an international mural festival that brings international and local artists to Detroit to create works of art throughout the city.

Most murals are in the Eastern Market area, where the artists paint murals live during the multi-day festival in late September.

My recommendation: check out or download the map and explore this year’s murals.
