Photo of the Week: Monarch Butterfly on Swamp Milkweed

With my plans to create a more bird and butterfly friendly yard, last year I replanted one of my flowers beds with Swamp Milkweed and other native Michigan plants.

The milkweed plants had a couple blossoms last summer, which surprised me.

From my research, I understood it would take a year for milkweed to establish itself and bloom.

As of this week, the milkweed has been blooming for several weeks. It’s been exciting to see Monarchs visit the flowers.

I even saw one Monarch caterpillar munching on the leaves!

Since the migratory Monarch butterfly is considered an endangered species, here’s to hoping more Monarchs stop by my yard and lay eggs in the milkweed!
