Photo of the Week: Michigan Strawberries

For years, I’ve picked strawberries at nearby Michigan u-pick berry farms.

Which I make into strawberry jam, a favorite for my family members.

This year was no different.

Except for strawberries in southeast Michigan coming in earlier (Wayback Archive) than any u-pick farmer here can remember.

Guess our warmer spring temperatures and plenty of rain encouraged fast growth of the sweet, red, Michigan strawberries I love.

U-Pick Strawberries in Southeast Michigan

Strawberry season is short in southeast Michigan, lasting a little over two weeks.

If you want fresh strawberries, you need to pick or buy them within a short period of time.

This year berries were ready for picking before the end of May. Usually they come in the first or second week of June, dependent on the weather.

The photo of strawberries in this post represents about nine pounds of the more than 15 pounds of berries I picked this month.

In addition to canning two batches of strawberry jam, I enjoyed:

  • Making homemade strawberry ice cream
  • Eating several salads made from my home-grown lettuce with fresh strawberries
  • Baking shortcake for freshly-sliced berries
  • Freezing several quarts of berries

For me, Michigan strawberries kick off the beginning of summer and lots of delicious summer vegetable and fruit treats!
