What a fun day when I visited Kensington Metropark in Milford this weekend!
My primary reason to visit Kensington was their annual spring native plant sale; my secondary reason: birding.
When I arrived at the metropark, I noticed signs around the park about a regatta.
I was curious, but was determined to get my plants before I explored the regatta.
My first stop was the nature center, the location for the native plant sale. Over two dozen different native plant species to choose from!
Leaving the nature center with a dozen new plants, I overheard someone talking about the regatta. And learned it was Michigan state high school rowing championships.
How cool!
A quick online search revealed twenty-five clubs were participating in the championships; two clubs from as far away as Traverse City, Michigan (almost five hours away).
The regatta started at 7:55 in the morning. You can imagine the two main areas where the race ended were packed with vehicles and people.
But the park area where the race started wasn’t busy at all.
I was able to find a location on the east side of Kent Lake, where I could watch the race, without being in a crowd of people.
While the photos are far away, it was exciting to watch from a distance and hear all the cheering.
Check out the results from the state championships.
