I always look forward to the end of summer when Michigan peaches arrive at our local farm markets.
In my humble opinion, Michigan peaches are the juiciest and best tasting peaches!
But I’m biased, we had a peach tree in our backyard when I was growing up.
And one of my favorite things to do in August was to check the peaches (by touch and smell) in the morning. I learned quickly that if the peach was too hard to pull off the tree, it wasn’t ready to be picked.
(It was a careful balance. Dad said it was better to pick peaches when they were slightly under ripe rather than let them get overripe on the tree.)
Sadly, this year’s Michigan peach crop was a major loss for farmers. For the second year in a row.
The winter cold snap earlier in the year caused peach buds to freeze. Resulting in few Michigan peaches.
This week, I was lucky to find a half-peck of Michigan peaches at our local farmers market.
We’ve been eating juicy peaches all week!
And enjoyed freshly baked peach scones (King Arthur peach scone recipe) in the morning for our Labor Day holiday weekend.
