The almost 10-foot red and brown rooster with ornate tail stands out on Ford Road in between the maple trees that line the busy road.
I smiled at the nearby Chicken Dinner sign with “$1.75” crossed out, replaced with “Free” in capital letters.
Obviously not a real bird, but the metallic Meet Chuck sculpture will catch your attention in front of Target in Canton Township, Michigan.
Meet Chuck
Created by Bob Pollack from The Village Blacksmith in Grand Ledge, Michigan, Meet Chuck is one of the sculptures in the 16th Annual Sculpture Exhibit on Ford Road in Canton, Michigan.
The salvaged steel sculpture was inspired by Pollack watching one of his roosters foraging and strutting about as it guarded the hens in the yard.
I was fascinated to learn the sculpture was shown at ArtPrize 2018 in Grand Rapids, Michigan where it was installed in Grand Rapids Downtown Market.
According to the ArtPrize entry description:
Bob hopes this larger-than-life piece makes you smile.
Yes, it makes me smile every time I pass it on Ford Road!
I’m glad to live in a community with a focus on public art.
16th Annual Sculpture Exhibit
The exhibit is sponsored by our Canton Downtown Development Authority with assistance from the Canton Public Art Committee.
Sculptures in the exhibit can be seen along Ford Road in front of businesses from Haggerty to Canton Center Road.
Each piece has been created by a Midwest artist.
The exhibit is part of the Midwest Sculpture Initiative (MSI), which provides outdoor sculpture exhibitions throughout the Midwest.
