They’re back!
It’s that time of year in southeast Michigan or northwest Ohio when Mayflies are seen on all kinds of surfaces near lakes and rivers.
Have you seen any in your area?
For folks in southeast Michigan who live near Lake Erie or other lakes and rivers, you’ll find masses of Mayflies on doors, windows, vehicles, and other surfaces in June and July.
This photo was taken on the outside brick wall of a store in Monroe, Michigan.
While it can be annoying to see them covering door handles and flying about, it’s a good thing to see Mayflies.
They’re a sign of good water quality.
According to the National Wildlife Foundation:
The larva is often used as a bioindicator species to measure the health of water.
Though they’re called Mayflies, they’re active throughout warm months of the year, not only May.
You may also know them by their other names: shadfly or fish fly.
