Photo of the Week: Magnolias in Bloom at Nichols Arboretum

Last week, when my husband noticed magnolias were blooming in our neighborhood, he asked about the flower colors.

He commented the magnolia flowers he had seen were mostly pink and white. I replied I had also seen purple magnolia flowers.

And said I didn’t think magnolia flowers were yellow.

Well, I was wrong.

I was out birding with our local bird group at Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor, Michigan a few days ago when several of us noticed a tree in the Magnolia Glade with gorgeous yellow flowers.

I discovered Magnolia Butterflies, which has large four to five inch tulip-shaped flowers on a tree that can grow 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide.

And it turns out I wasn’t alone about the magnolia flower colors; no one else in our group knew magnolias could have yellow flowers.
