While US football fans around the world are excited about a certain football game (Super Bowl) today, birders will be celebrating the day a bit differently with some of our favorite Superb Owl photos.
For me to see a Long-eared Owl, which are rare in Michigan, is a special treat.
Long-eared Owls are long and slender nocturnal birds that are often found in and around conifers.
In the past, I’ve only seen Long-eared Owls in pine trees. Until this year when I saw this bird (and three others) roosting in a dense tangle of vines and tree branches.
Though the bird is partially camouflaged, you can make out the dark ear tufts, orange face, white lines that border the inside of the eye, and dark streaking and barring underneath.
Not one of my better photos, but Long-eared Owls are secretive and elusive. I was glad to get this photo of the owl (heavily cropped) from a distance.
Happy Superb Owl Day!
