Photo of the Week: Goodbye, The Courthouse Grille

It’s been planned for years since it closed, but the demolition of a longtime Plymouth Township, Michigan restaurant site took place this past week.

Located on Plymouth Road, the site of The Courthouse Grille was demolished in preparation for new development.

The photo shows the fenced off property from the road, with the grayish chimney still standing, but the middle part of the two main buildings demolished.

If you look to the back right of the photo, you’ll see some of the destroyed building.

I wrote about The Courthouse Grille in 2019, with hopes that redevelopment plans would change.

Sadly, they didn’t happen.

The restaurant had an 80+ year history in the Plymouth, Michigan and west metro Detroit community.

Originally opened in the 1930’s as Hillside BBQ, I knew the restaurant as Hillside Inn when I was growing up.

Like many other families in the west metro Detroit area, the Hillside Inn was a favorite restaurant for special celebrations like birthdays, anniversaries, homecoming dinners, proms, and wedding receptions.

I still remember attending my senior Girl Scouts graduation at Hillside.

When it was sold and renamed Ernesto’s, we celebrated my father’s 70th birthday with my family.

And later, when it was renamed The Courthouse Grille, our family enjoyed many lunches and dinners there together.

I researched, but couldn’t discover if the original development is still planned.

Or something else will be built on the site.

If you’re in the area and know what the development plans are for the former restaurant site, share the information in the comments.
