Photo of the Week: Garlic Sprouting

Excited to announce another sign of spring: garlic I planted last November have sprouted!

Not only 1 or 2 garlics.

All 27 garlic cloves I planted have germinated.

In fall 2024, I planted 10 garlic cloves in my garden. I never planted garlic before, and hadn’t planned to until a gardening friend encouraged me.

I found a spot in my existing vegetable garden to plant them. An area where I typically plant spinach, lettuce, or tomatoes.

The garlic germinated in spring and my family enjoyed some wonderful tasting garlic in late summer 2025.

But my homegrown garlic was consumed quickly. By November 2025, it was all gone.

Which reminded me to actually make a plan for growing garlic.

I extended a nearby bed, an area that gets full sun from spring to fall, for my garlic. Where I planted a new variety, Music.

Covered the bed with two inches of mowed over fallen maple leaves.

And waited for spring.

When the garlic first sprouted this month, I was thrilled! Especially since we’ve had such a cold winter, with heavy snow. I wasn’t sure they would make it.

And they actually sprouted a week earlier than the garlic last year.

Another delight, since southeast Michigan had an early spring in 2025, with unexpected warm weather reaching 70 degrees Fahrenheit in February.

Fingers crossed! I’m hoping for a good garlic harvest in mid-summer.
