Photo of the Week: First Snowy Day in January

After a dull, gray, and rainy January in southeast Michigan with only a few days of sunshine, I was glad for this morning’s snow showers.

The light layer of white snow brightened up the landscape and made it a lot easier to find bright red Northern Cardinals which stand out against the snow-covered branches.

Until today, January in southeast Michigan has been days of relatively warm winter weather with overcast skies and a gray/brown landscape.

And no snow.

Not typical for January in southeast Michigan where most days are snowy and cold.

I enjoyed a snowy hike this morning with fellow Washtenaw Audubon Society members and other folks interested in birding at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Several people dressed in winter coats, hats, and boots hike down a snow-covered trail in the woods. Snow-covered plants and trees line the trail.

While we only saw less than two dozen birds, we enjoyed the quiet of the woods as a Carolina Wren called out, a muskrat foraged for food along the creek, and a few deer were seen in the brush.
