It might be late for other people in Michigan, but I was thrilled this weekend to have my first sighting of a monarch butterfly of the year.
In the cool shade under the towering canopy of the maple trees at Maybury State Park, I was gazing at an overgrown field of grass.
A fluttering movement of orange and black colors caught my attention as it landed in the tall grasses.
Quickly, I looked through my binoculars to confirm my first monarch butterfly, almost hidden by the grasses around it.
The butterfly paused for a few minutes before it flew off beyond the field.
Despite seeing dozens of birds in the park, the monarch was the only butterfly I saw for the day.
What a beautiful sight!
