Photo of the Week: Eastern Bluebird on a Gray, Wintry Day

On a cold, wintry day in Michigan, there aren’t a lot of birds that will catch your eye against the drab brown-gray landscape.

Even when there is snow on the ground.

But when you see a bird with a flash of blue, you can be almost certain it’s the Eastern Bluebird— one of the birds that always stands out with its vibrant blue wings, copper throat and chest, with a white belly.

This weekend I saw this bluebird, traveling with a small flock of other bluebirds, perched on shrubs and small trees with fruit at Independence Lake County Park in Whitmore Lake, Michigan.

We had no sun to brighten up the sky yesterday, I was thankful to spot the bright blue of the bluebirds as they flew through the woods.
