Photo of the Week: Caspian Tern on a Fishing Expedition

Spring seems to have finally arrived in southeast Michigan!

Which meant I spent my weekend looking for spring bird migrants as they made their way to their breeding areas in northern Michigan and Canada.

Heading into Robert B. Long Park in Oakland County yesterday morning, I met up with a pair of birders who had just left the trail.

Did you see the tern?, they asked me.

Where?, I replied.

Over the pond on the left, about 30 feet out. See it? It’s fishing.

And there it was.

A Caspian Tern with its distinctive red bill diving quickly into the water, but coming up empty.

He circled a few more times around the pond before he attempted another dive. Success!
