You know how sometimes you get a late Christmas present?
Well, this week I finally got mine.
Not exactly, but this week my Christmas present finally bore fruit.
Or for my present, mushrooms.
For Christmas 2024, I received a present of a North Spore spray and grow mushroom kit in a box.
The instructions are straightforward, cut an X in the film on one side of the box. And spray the X area several times a day with water.
In a couple weeks, mushrooms are expected to grow. (At least that’s what the kit said.)
I’ve never grown mushrooms, at least not on purpose. Several mushrooms pop through the ground every year from the roots of our old willow tree.
Which was cut down over 20 years ago, when it split in half and showed how decayed the trunk was.
Growing Mushrooms From a Kit
My kit was a blue oyster mushroom kit. And I was excited to try it out and eager to learn more about growing mushrooms indoors.
Two weeks went quickly with my mushroom kit in a box.
There was no sign of pinning (the first signs of mushrooms growing, which look like small baby mushrooms the size of tiny pinheads).
I kept misting regularly. And wondered if I had a kit that might not produce mushrooms.
Three and half weeks later, last Tuesday, I finally saw the first signs of mushroom pinning!
Overnight, the pinheads started forming mushrooms.
And growing bigger. I checked the mushrooms each morning.
By afternoon, they had grown even larger.
Four days after I saw the mushroom pins, I harvested my first blue oyster mushrooms. And we’re having them tonight for dinner!
