Photo of the Week: Black-necked Stilt at Howard Marsh

One of the most distinctive shorebirds, I found the Black-necked Stilt lazily wading along the flats of Howard Marsh, a newly created coastal wetland on Lake Erie’s southern shore, near Bono, Ohio.

A graceful bird with the most remarkable looking pink spindly legs, the Black-necked Stilt has a glossy black back, slender black bill, and a white underbody.

It’s one of my favorite shorebirds since it’s a shorebird I can identify easily! Not like the sandpipers where I struggle to figure out what I’m looking at.

Talking with other birders in the area, I learned several Black-necked Stilts are nesting at the marsh, though I didn’t see any of the young birds.
