Photo of the Week: Ann Arbor Orchid Festival

After last week’s warm weather and memories of the Philadelphia Flower Show still fresh in my mind, I admit it. I have the flower and garden bug.

Unfortunately, with colder weather this weekend, it was a bit too cold to work on the soil and do some planting.

So I spent my afternoon visiting the Ann Arbor Orchid Festival, hosted by the Ann Arbor Orchid Society at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

It was a fabulous show! The auditorium was filled with stunning exhibits of orchids. Classroom presentations (which I missed) included veteran orchid growers sharing tips and advice for orchid care.

I spent my time oohing and aahing over the gorgeous orchids, along with several other dozen orchid lovers. Each exhibit had breathtaking arrangements of orchids with brilliant colors, unusual petal intricacies, and stylized bracts.

Blooms on orchids can be big or small, differently shaped, single or double blooms on a single stalk or multiple stalks. Here’s a few of my favorite orchids I saw at the festival:

I had a great time chatting with growers, volunteers, and other flower lovers. And I managed to find a new orchid to add to my indoor garden.

If you’re in the southeast Michigan area, it’s a flower show you don’t want to miss! I’ve set a reminder on my calendar for next year.
