Pew Internet Research: The Web at 25 in the United States

As part of the 25th anniversary of the internet, the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, released their first of nine reports last week highlighting how Americans use the internet.

The first report focuses on internet usage and how it affects our personal relationships.

Based on the results of over 1000 phone interviews from January 9-12, 2014, several key takeaways include:

  • 87% of Americans now use the internet
  • 68% connect to the internet with mobile devices
  • 90% of internet users say the internet has been good for them personally
  • 76% of internet users say the internet has been good for society (15% says it’s been bad, 8% say it’s even)
  • 53% of internet users say the internet would be hard to give up
  • 67% of internet users say online communication with family and friends has strengthened their relationships

I found the survey results to be a fascinating read about how we use the internet, adoption an impact over time, and the role of the internet in our lives.

Check out the summary and more details on how the internet has woven itself into American life.
