For over seven years, I used LastPass for my password manager. While there were other excellent password manager applications, like 1Password and Dashlane, I needed support for Chromebook and multiple platforms.
LastPass was one of the first password managers to provide the support I needed.
And made it available in their free version.
I was such an advocate for LastPass, I promoted it in 3 password managers for Chromebook.
Eventually, Dashlane and 1Password added Chromebook support as well as other features.
But I didn’t feel the need to move to a different password manager. With hundreds of items in my LastPass account, I was happy with the features and support it offered.
Until August 2022, when LastPass announced a security incident.
According to the LastPass blog post, source code and technical info was stolen.
I was concerned, but didn’t act. Nothing in their August blog post indicated customers needed to take any action.
My focus at that time was closing down my design and development business, and transitioning my projects and clients to colleagues.
What Prompted Me to Switch to 1Password
In December 2022, LastPass users learned the breadth of the August 2022 incident.
Nor only was source code stolen, but the unauthorized party gained access to customer account info and vault data.
Which was unencrypted.
Meaning fields like LastPass usernames, URLs, email addresses, billing addresses, were all unencrypted.
Huge failure by LastPass to store info unencrypted.
An even bigger failure from LastPass: not informing customers quickly.
Nothing was holding me back, I made the switch to 1Password, a more secure password manager.
Three Months Later
I’m happy to report three months later, my switch to 1Password was successful. I no longer need support for Chromebook, but do need support for multiple platforms.
Which 1Password provides.
I find the interface easy for me to use on both desktop and mobile.
And I’ve been slowly reducing the number of items in my password manager as I close down online accounts (which has been a frustrating experience, another post I’ll be publishing soon).
