Memorial Day is a day to take time to honor the men and women who died in service of the United States of America.
My memories of Memorial Day include red poppies, parades, bagpipers playing in cemeteries, and flowers laid on graves.
Our community holds special ceremonies and parades at our local veterans’ memorial parks, which hold monuments honoring soldiers who died in service from the Civil War through the war in Afghanistan.
One monument that stands out for me is the monument in Plymouth Community Veterans’ Memorial Park honoring the soldiers who died during World War 1.
The monument has nine stars, each star bearing the name of one of the Plymouth soldiers who died in service. The plaque on the monument reads:
This Monument Erected By
The Ex-Servicemen’s Club
To Mark The Site Of Nine Trees
Which Were Planted In 1919 In Memory
Of The Plymouth Boys Who Died
In Their Country’s Service During
1917-1918
