Jetpack Plugin: What Modules are Enabled by Default

As co-organizer of the Metro Detroit WordPress meetup, I often get asked WordPress questions outside of our monthly meetups.

This week, one of our members sent me a message, asking about the Jetpack plugin.

They wanted to know which modules are enabled by default when Jetpack is installed.

I didn’t know. But I was curious to find out.

While I use Jetpack regularly on client sites, I enable/disable modules based on the needs of my client.

Sure, I could set up a new WordPress install and add Jetpack to it to find out which modules are enabled.

But I thought the answer would be easy to find online. So I visited the Jetpack website to search for the answer.

No luck.

My Next Step: Ask Jetpack

I tweeted to the Jetpack Twitter account, asking what modules were enabled and where I could find that information online.

Jeremy Herve, who works on Jetpack for Automattic, quickly responded, sharing a gist of the modules that are installed.

I thanked him for the quick reply and information.

And asked where I could find the list on the Jetpack site, thinking I must have missed it in my search.

No, it’s not online at this time, he replied.

I suggested it would be good information for users to have online. Herve said he’d pass my suggestion on to the team.

This original post published on March 14, 2018 included a list of all 20+ modules enabled by default.

But I’ve updated this post, since I heard back from Herve that Jetpack staff had published a post listing what modules were enabled by default.

Thank you, Jetpack staff for the quick response and acting on my recommendation in less than a week.

My appreciation to all the Jetpack staff members who made that happen!

Summary

It’s useful to know what modules are enabled by default when you install the Jetpack plugin.

Not everyone needs to have all 20+ default modules enabled.

For example, if you’re not planning to do any math on your site, disable the Beautiful Math module.

And if you’re using a form plugin for your contact form, you’ll want to disable the Contact Form module.

Hopefully this information helps you with Jetpack installations on the sites you manage.

  1. This is so handy, Deborah! I’m still very new to WP, so I’ll be referring back to this post after I get more familiar with it. This is something I wondered about, too.
