Is the Web Ending?

Call me an optimist.

As someone who has regularly published on the web for almost 30 years, I’m hoping the artificial intelligence (AI) craze that started when ChatGPT (generative pre-trained transformer) was released in late 2022 is a phase that ends soon.

Rather than AI being the end of the web.

I have no interest in using AI and see it as a big marketing promotion by technology companies investing billions of dollars (or other currency) to create AI systems people don’t want or need.

That’s my opinion.

I know other people have different opinions about AI.

What got me started on this personal rant today?

Reading Jen Sorensen’s “Web’s End” comic for August 27, 2025.

I loved the first three panels!

They describe the web I loved when I first began publishing and designing websites.

The joy of reading other people’s websites. And the fun of learning something new.

The fourth through eighth panels walk us through the past 15-20 years, with the final panel offering a statement for the same hope I have for the web.
