How Twitter Brought Molly Holzschlag to Detroit

It all started in mid-October 2011.

When Molly Holzschlag shared her photo on Twitter of the light tunnel in the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport, it caught my attention.

“Hey, that’s close to my home,” I replied back and shared the history and video of the light tunnel in the McNamara Terminal.

As well as my own light tunnel photo.

Molly replied she had a great time in southeastern Michigan when she last visited. Said she’d love to come back.

I quickly responded, “I’d be happy to make that happen.”

Six Months Later

After we shared a few email messages, tweets and phone calls, Molly Holzschlag returned to southeast Michigan.

And led an incredible talk at the inaugural Rise & Detroit event this morning at the Madison Building in downtown Detroit.

Tonight Molly will be presenting “From Documents to Apps: Evolving an Open Web” at our April Refresh Detroit meeting at the Madison Building.

As one of the Refresh Detroit organizers, I’m thrilled to have Molly speak to our meetup members. I’ve interacted with Molly on Twitter for a few years, but never met her in person.

Her books were a driving force for me to become a freelance web designer, leading me to get hired for my first non-contract job at the community college on the web services team.

Thanks to sponsorship for Molly’s visit to Detroit, from Skidmore Studio, QuickenLoans, Detroit Venture Partners, TechSmith and Michigan Usability Professionals’ Association.

  1. Isn’t it amazing how Twitter breaks down barriers? I had chatted with Molly via Twitter in the past, published some Storify posts of her talks, and attended several online conferences she spoke at. Molly is a fantastic speaker! Wish you could have joined us Chad.
