Happy International Left-Handers Day!

Today, August 3, marks the 33rd anniversary of International Left-Handers Day, a day to celebrate the uniqueness of being left-handed and to raise awareness of the challenges faced in a world where most people are right-handed.

International Left-Handed Day was launched by the Left-Handers Club in 1992 in the United Kingdom.

As word spread about the special day, annual celebrations have been held worldwide with parties, games, and other events where people only use their left hands.

Did you know an estimated 10% of all people around the world are left-handed?

This year is the first year I learned about International Left-Handers Day, despite having a family member who is left-handed.

When I asked my family member if they knew about the day, they said they never heard of it.

Famous Left-Handed People

While I knew US President Barack Obama and classical music composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were left-handed, I discovered several other famous left-handed people:

  • Aristotle, philosopher and scientist
  • Vincent Van Gogh, artist
  • Celine Dion, singer
  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg, US Supreme Court Justice
  • Mark Twain, writer
  • Marie Curie, scientist
  • Pierre Curie, scientist
  • Prince William, United Kingdom royal family
  • Martina Navratilova, tennis player

If you’re left-handed, how are you celebrating International Left-Handers Day?
