Google Doodle Celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Rubik’s Cube

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube, today’s Google Doodle is an interactive 3D version of the popular puzzle. (The puzzle is also available at the Google Doodle archive.)

Click on the Doodle image to expand the cube. You can spin or rotate the entire cube or rows by swiping inside or outside the cube as you solve the interactive puzzle.

Google has taken the puzzle a step further, allowing users to share the number of moves taken to solve it on Google+, Facebook, or Twitter.

I imagine there will be lots of lost time in offices today as people try to match the squares of the same colors on each of the six sides.

Invented by Erno Rubik, a Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture, the Rubik’s Cube was intended to solve the structural issue of moving independent parts without the entire structure falling apart.

I remember spending hours trying to solve the Rubik’s Cube puzzle. Struggling to match up that last row of colored squares left me frustrated and finally asking my friends to help me out.

Spoiler alert: if you want to know how to solve the Google Doodle Rubik’s Cube, check out this video:

How about you? Did you try to solve the puzzle today? How did you do?
