It’s not the first snow we’ve had this fall, but this morning’s snow looks like it’s going to stick.
Which is going to make my goal of picking lettuce on Thanksgiving Day in southeast Michigan a bit more challenging.
Huh, you might ask?
Well, last year we had a warm spell in late November, and it was 60 degrees on Thanksgiving Day. I picked cilantro in our garden that day and made salsa to go with our Thanksgiving dinner.
This year I planted leaf lettuce in September with the goal of picking lettuce on Thanksgiving Day. Traveling to Florida last week meant I heavily mulched the lettuce before I left and crossed my fingers the lettuce would survive.
It did!
But this weekend’s cold spell and tonight’s prediction of temperatures in the mid-teens may mean the end of my lettuce.
I covered the lettuce last night, and checked it this morning. It survived another cold Michigan night. Here’s a photo of the lettuce I took this morning.
My goal would have been a lot easier if I had built or bought a cold frame, but I didn’t. Probably not one of my better decisions.
With less than a week til Thanksgiving, keep warm thoughts for my lettuce!
