How to Change Language of Live Captions in Twitter Spaces

When Stéphanie Walter asked on Twitter if anyone knew how to change the live captions language of Twitter Spaces from English to another language, I was curious.

I knew Twitter Spaces announced live captions in 2021 and I knew it supported captions in multiple languages.

But I didn’t remember anything about how to change live captions to a different language.

A quick review of settings on my Twitter account didn’t reveal anything obvious to me about caption language for Twitter Spaces.

Turns out it’s easier than I expected.

Live captions in Twitter Spaces is dependent on the display language settings you’ve chosen for Twitter on your device or Twitter on the web.

Which is good to know.

Except for two things:

  1. Twitter doesn’t mention Twitter Space live captions settings on their display language settings help page
  2. Twitter Spaces doesn’t provide info on their help pages about language caption options

I’m not sure why.

Sure would be helpful to have a reference to live caption language options on the Twitter Spaces help site.

When I asked Twitter Spaces (on Twitter) about changing live captions languages, I didn’t receive a reply.

I did get confirmation from Twitter Spaces project manager Evan Jones about how language is selected for Twitter Spaces live captions.

However, I’m glad to know the team has committed to making Twitter Spaces accessible.
