When news spread beavers had returned to Belle Isle in 2012, after almost 100 years away, people were excited!

An indicator species for successful wildlife management and habitat restoration, beavers returning to Belle Isle was positive news for Detroit River water quality.

Unfortunately, recently, the beavers’ hard work on the island has resulted in many trees being damaged and felled.

Photo of the Week: Trout Lily in Bloom

Yellow petals of the Trout Lily stand out against its brown mottled green leaves and brown leaf litter.

Spring has taken its time to arrive in Michigan, five days ago we had two inches of snow in our area!

Three days ago, I saw my first Trout Lily mottled brown green leaves sprouting through the leaf litter on the forest floor, but couldn’t find any blooms.

Today, with two days of 80 degree weather, I found plenty of yellow blooming Trout Lily in the forest.

Photo of the Week: Bald Eagle Duo

Large white-headed dark-brown feathered raptors with yellow talons perch next to each other on a bare tree limb, looking out over the marsh.

As I drove near the entrance of the Magee Marsh parking lot, vehicles ahead of me slowed down and eventually stopped.

Not unusual at this wonderful wildlife area on the southwestern shore of Lake Erie, north of Oak Harbor, Ohio.

Magee Marsh is well known for its wildlife.

Especially for the flights of waterfowl and migrating songbirds seen each spring.
