We were into our second hour of birding this week at Erie Marsh Preserve before we found a Semipalmated Sandpiper.
Once my birding friend and I found one, we discovered another two dozen (and possibly more!) Semipalmated Sandpipers foraging in an adjacent mudflat at the marsh.

Commonly found perching on an exposed tree or shrub branch, I usually see the Eastern Kingbird on the edge of marshes.
The bird flies out quickly to grab an insect before settling back on the same branch.

When I visited our local farm nursery last summer to order some compost to be delivered, the owner saw me browsing through their seed packets.
And told me to take one of the packets home with me, free of charge.
I had already planted my vegetables and many flowers (other than native plants going in the new composted beds), so I picked a packet of zinnias I never heard of before: Lilliput zinnias.
And they’ve become one of my favorite flowers to grow!
