Art Advent Calendar 2023

Not sure how I missed it in previous years, but I only learned a couple weeks ago about the ninth annual Art Advent Calendar.

Started by Jay Bigam, a self-taught artist in Alberta, Canada, Art Advent Calendar launched in 2015 with the idea of brightening and improving timelines for folks on the platform originally called Twitter.

Artists were encouraged to share an original piece of art each day from December 1 to 24 and tag their post with the hashtag #ArtAdventCalendar.

From Bigam’s post:

In 2015, over 20 Edmonton area artists participated and the hashtag had over a million impressions.

The event has grown over the years, giving artists an opportunity to find an audience for their work on social media and for art lovers to promote, follow, and share the artwork they love.

With changes at the platform formerly known as Twitter, Bigam chose to run the 2023 Art Advent Calendar on Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads.

This year over 300 people are participating.

And I’ve decided to join the event by sharing some of my favorite photographs daily on Mastodon!

I’m also sharing and following new artists I’ve discovered by following the #ArtAdventCalendar hashtag.

My photo at the top of this blog post is my #ArtAdventCalendar post for today.

Here’s a few other Art Advent Calendar photographs I’ve posted. If you’re a longtime reader of this blog, you may recognize a few of the photos.

Star-shaped pink and white blooms sit on green lily pads in the calm water. In the background, large round red lily pads.

Get Involved

If you’re on Mastodon, love art or want to have a more beautiful timeline, check out the #ArtAdventCalendar hashtag. Like, share and follow the artists whose work you enjoy.

For folks on Bluesky, it’s a little bit more involved. Check out the section titled “A Note for Bluesky Users” in Bigam’s post for steps you’ll need to take.

And if you’re an artist of any kind, join this year’s Art Advent Calendar event!

I love Bigam’s note of encouragement:

Art can be anything.

Paintings, drawings, sculpture, textiles, beading, photography.

If you think it’s art and it beautifies the timeline then post it.

We can all get caught up with online negative news and events. Here’s a way to enjoy some beautiful art and discover new artists.
