A Few Quick Tips for Setting Up Windows for Development

When you’re a developer switching from a Mac environment to Windows or you’re a new developer working in Windows, it can be challenging to know where to start customizing your environment.

Wouldn’t it be nice to get favorite tips and tricks from a Windows developer?

Thanks to Christina Workman’s question on Twitter about moving from a Mac to Windows development environment, Amy Letson shared some of her favorite Windows settings.

Setting Up Windows for Development

While there are plenty of Windows settings you can customize, these setup tips will get you started.

Windows Settings for File and Folder Viewing

  1. Select the Start icon
  2. Type “PC” and select the “This PC” app
  3. When the new window open, select the View tab
  4. Go to Options (last choice in View options)
  5. Select the dropdown and choose Change folder and search options
  6. Visit each of the three tabs (General, View, Search) to customize your settings

Within the View tab, make sure

  1. “Hide extensions for known file types” is unchecked
  2. “Show hidden files, folders, and drives” is checked
