Whether you’re talking with a client about their project, discussing a new strategy with a team member, or catching up with a family member, having a good conversation is getting harder these days.
And according to Georgia Public Broadcasting radio host Celeste Headlee, it’s because we’ve somehow lost a critical component for better conversations:
A conversation requires a balance between talking and listening, and somewhere along the way, we lost that balance.
In her TED video, 10 Ways to Have a Better Conversation, Headlee explains how technology is partly to blame.
But own own behaviors play a large role in whether we have a great conversation or one that leaves us unfriending someone on Facebook.
Personally, I need to work on numbers 1, 6, and 8 of Headlee’s ten basic rules for better conversations.
I loved her recommendation to enter every conversation with the expectation that you will learn something.
Check out her 12-minute video on how you can talk with people, stay out of the weeds, and be prepared to be amazed in your conversations.
