Rethinking User Personas
Jonathan Devine, In-House Realty
In the neverending quest for the UX practitioner to answer the all-important “why”; why users do or don’t do what we expect them to, we waste a lot of time on “who” thinking in error, that a persona will help us answer “why.”
Jonathan will highlight how personas fail us where it matters most and will discuss solutions:
- “Heuristic persona” is code for “we really have no clue”
- Users act and react upon context and situations
- 100 different persona types may share one context
- Adding real context to a persona makes it awesome
- Build for the context, not the biographic minutia
Jonathan is a senior graphic designer at In-House Realty, a Quicken Loans company, in Detroit, Michigan.
For over eleven years, Jonathan has been fixing broken user experiences all across the USA and into Europe.
When he’s not presenting wireframes or whiteboarding, you can find him spending time with his wife and son, or streaming his favorite games on Twitch. Follow him on Twitter @clandevine.
Usability Testing: How a Green, Bewildered UX Researcher Uncovered Loads of Valuable Data
Diane Bowen, Covenant Eyes
Your company’s customer service department complains that users are confused. Website analytics indicate two important forms are abandoned at an unusual rate. Users are not engaging with your mobile app.
Diane Bowen will explore how to reveal user pain points and develop empathy with user goals through usability testing. Rich behavioral patterns emerge and qualitative data reveals the human experience, providing direction to development teams.
Diane works for Covenant Eyes as a user experience practitioner.
She’s a champion for the user, seeking to match business goals with user needs through interviews and usability tests, card sorts, innovation games, surveys, and other research tools.
